Esther Pogatzki-Zahn

Esther Pogatzki-Zahn is an anesthesiologist, pain specialist and Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, University Hospital Muenster (UKM), Germany. She works as a pain specialist clinically and leads the Pain Service at the UKM. In addition, she is PI of the pain research laboratory at the University of Muenster (“Translational Pain Research Group”). Esther Pogatzki-Zahn’s research focuses on peripheral and central mechanisms relevant for postoperative, neuropathic and cancer pain. Her current focus lies on the development of innovative new tools to assess pain-related behavior in rodents, preclinical “omic” and optogenetic studies, psychophysical testing in humans, the development of patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) in patients and new strategies able to treat and prevent pain. Furthermore, she is currently involved in a number of national and international multicenter projects like “Pain-Out” and “PruSearch”, coordinates the multicenter research projects “POETpain” and WP2 of the “IMI-PAINCARE” project. She is a member of the “Prospect Initiative” and the “German Research Network of Neuropathic Pain” (DFNS) e.V . She is involved in a number of guideline processes related to pain, teaching activities and lectures related to pain. Esther Pogatzki-Zahn is currently Council member of the “International Association for the Study of Pain” (IASP), Secretary of the “German Pain Society” (chapter of the IASP) and other societies (ESA/EFIC) and committees. She published more than 140 original peer reviewed manuscripts, more than 50 review articles/ editorials and 16 Book chapters and won several awards. She receives research funds from the DFG, EU, the BMBF and the G-BA.
